I thought I would write something about life. A friend of mine's daughter died suddenly at the age of twenty two. She had heart problems and diabetes. She had suffered from emotional disturbances as well. Her mother loved her dearly and missed her terribly. So what is life? Most people we speak to would like a long life. Do they really know what they long for? Well, at age 20 or 30, whilst they are still healthy and strong they do seem to know, and with the help of doctors want to go on living what they call a normal life.
But is there such a thing as a normal life? I doubt it. Long life might appeal to the young who see themselves without wars, sickness and death, but that is because they hope they will avoid these. Some people do avoid diseases that kill, or wars or crime or accidents; miraculously I think.
The gift of life, however, is not given to us for dreams but for reality. The reality is as Job said, '14:1 "A mortal, born of woman, few of days and full of trouble, comes up like a flower and withers, flees like a shadow and does not last.' Job 14:1
Our lives have a purpose and that is to learn the loss of Paradise and mans foolish ways. We see what mankind does and we know what life has become from the beginning of creation, when God made everything good. God has not taken away glimpses of heaven but we know however happy and satisfied our lives are, they will become unhappy and if not short, their length will not yield anything better.
What does matter then in life? To love God and each other for God wants to save us from sin and death. He can do that and will do it if we trust the Lord Jesus Christ.
